A new variant of the COVID-19 virus called BA.3.2 or nicknamed “Cicada” has now been detected in at least 25 countries around the world. This is concerning because it remained undetected for a long time before finally spreading more widely.
The name “Cicada” is analogous to an insect that hides for a long time before resurfacing. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), although it has many mutations and could potentially transmit more easily or cause reinfection, preliminary data shows that this variant does not cause more severe illness.

BA.3.2 is a subline of Omicron. This variant was first identified in South Africa in November 2024 and was not detected until it began to spread more widely in 2025.
According to the latest surveillance report from the CDC, this variant has been found in at least 25 states. Cases began to increase since around September 2025, detected through clinical samples, travel screenings and air quality monitoring in various regions.

In an analysis published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, BA.3.2 was called a “potential saltation variant” because it has undergone many mutations in a short period of time.
BA.3.2 is said to have around 70 to 75 Spike protein mutations, many more than the previous variant. This mutation could potentially increase the virus’s ability to evade immunity from previous infections or vaccines.
In the CDC report, it is stated that this condition can trigger “immune evasion.” Meanwhile, a study published in The Lancet said BA.3.2 showed strong antibody evasion.
However, laboratory data also show that this virus binds less effectively to the ACE2 receptor on lung cells, which is the virus’s entry point into the body.
