Deputy Minister of Interior (Wamendagri), Bima Arya Sugiarto, emphasized that good spatial planning is the key to developing the diverse potentials of the Riau Islands Province (Kepri). Bima believes that land use planning must be supported by strong coordination, including efforts to mitigate land conflicts, so that development can proceed optimally and sustainably.
“Of course, we have to make sure that the spatial planning is mastered and we work on it together to become a resource [pendapatan daerah]”, said Bima in his statement, Wednesday (8/7/2026).
He conveyed this during the specific working visit of Commission II of the DPR RI regarding the role of the governor as the Central Government Representative (GWPP) in the regions which took place in Graha Kepri, Batam City.
Furthermore, Bima said the Riau Islands were mostly water and only a small part of the area was land. However, the Riau Islands have great potential in various sectors, ranging from manufacturing, commerce, maritime and natural resources, to historical tourism.
Bima emphasized that the task that needs to be paid attention to is to ensure that the limited land space can be used optimally. Apart from this, the regional government (Pemda) of the Riau Islands region needs to pay attention to four challenges, namely environmental degradation, vulnerability to disasters, spatial conflicts and high population influx, especially in Batam.
In this regard, the Ministry of Interior, together with Commission II of the DPR RI, will ensure that the various regional regulations are in line with the potential and challenges of the Riau Islands.
“We are paying special attention to this. That is why the Ministry of the Interior, in this case, Mr. President [Komisi II DPR]ensuring that all regional regulations are linked to APBD planning, this takes into consideration the potential factors and challenges mentioned above. “The regulations are there, we make sure that they are in line with them,” he explained.
Furthermore, Bima highlighted that in addition to having economic potential, the Riau Islands also have historical and cultural values ​​that differentiate them from other regions. Meanwhile, the Riau Islands, especially Penyengat Island, are an important center of Malay culture and the birthplace of Raja Ali Haji, a character who wrote guidelines on the Indonesian language and author of Gurindam Dua Belas.
For this reason, Bima appreciates the Riau Islands provincial government’s plan to build a language museum on Penyengat Island in a bid to enhance its historic tourist attraction.
“This area has been the center of government of the Kingdom of Riau since 1800. So it’s a bit long, it’s a center of Malay culture, there’s Raja Ali Haji, etc. That’s why it feels like the Ministry of Interior with [Kementerian] ATR/BPN, [Kementerian] “Tourism will support us together,” he explained.

Apart from historical tourism, Bima also encourages the Riau Islands to develop the sports tourism sector which currently continues to grow. He believes that Batam and a number of other areas in the Riau Islands have the potential to host various national and international sporting events that could increase tourist visits and boost PAD.
“I’m sure it’s Batam, the Riau Islands, it’s sports tourism, there’s a triathlon, later there will be marathon stars. It will be extraordinary,” he concluded.
