Former mayor of Arcadia, Los Angeles, California, United States (US), Eileen Wang admitted to being a spy for the Chinese government. Before this confession, Wang was known to be a Democratic Party politician.

The 58-year-old formerly served as leader of the Parent Teacher Association at Camino Grove Elementary School. He also served as president of the American Southwest Chamber of Commerce.
Wang was then elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022. He then became mayor through the city’s rotating leadership system, in which a mayor is chosen from five members of the local city council. She made history as the first Chinese-American woman to serve on the Arcadia City Council.

However, Wang resigned from the city council on Monday (5/11) and gave up his position as mayor of Arcadia after being indicted by the US federal government as the case progressed.
He claimed to be an unregistered foreign agent of China on American soil. This was stated in court documents that were revealed to the public on Monday (11/5) local time.
In the case against him, Wang was accused by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of using a news site where he successfully published pro-China content under the direction of Beijing government officials between 2020 and 2022.
One of the contents is an essay denying genocide and forced labor in Xinjiang.
A man who allegedly collaborated with Wang on pro-China propaganda pleaded guilty in October last year and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence.

“By her own admission, Eileen Wang secretly served the interests of the Chinese government,” Roman Rozhavsky, deputy director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence and Counterintelligence Division, said in a statement.
“Let this be a clear warning: individuals who act on behalf of foreign governments to influence our democracy will be identified, investigated and brought to justice,” he stressed.
Wang could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted in court. He is expected to make his formal confession during a trial to be held in the coming weeks.
