US Marines intercepted an Iranian-flagged oil tanker, released it and ordered it to change course. This was stated by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) in a statement.
CENTCOM said the US military has so far diverted 91 ships to ensure compliance with the blockade imposed by the US last month.
In the incident on Wednesday (5/20) local time, US Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) boarded the M/T Celestial Sea, allegedly in an attempt to breach the US blockade.

CENTCOM said the tanker was in transit to an Iranian port.
“US forces released the vessel after conducting a search and ordered the crew to change course,” CENTCOM said in a statement. Al-ArabiyaThursday (5/21/2026).
The United States and Iran have not yet reached a peace agreement. The two countries continue to threaten each other. Israel said its troops were now on alert to face a potential war.
Israeli army chief Lt. Col. Eyal Zamir said the army was on the highest level of alert as Tehran and Washington exchanged threats of war.
“Currently, the IDF (military) is at the highest level of alert and ready for any development,” Zamir said during a meeting of all division commanders, reported by AFP, Wednesday (20/5/2026).

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously warned that the war in the Middle East would spread beyond the region if the United States and Israel continued their attacks on the Islamic republic.

“If the aggression against Iran is repeated, the regional war promised this time will extend far beyond the region, and our devastating attacks will destroy you,” the Revolutionary Guards said in a statement published on their Sepah News website, reported by the AFP news agency.
The warning came after US President Donald Trump said Washington could attack Iran again if there was no agreement on resolving the war in the coming days.
The two camps have increased threats while exchanging proposals to end the war that has been raging since February 28. A ceasefire has been in effect since April 8.
