FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Former KPK investigator Novel Baswedan spoke about the decision to transfer Yaqut Cholil Qoumas’ detention status to house arrest, which angered the public.

He felt torn after the Corruption Eradication Commission denied the practice of “flirting” and stressed that the move was in line with the procedures of the new Criminal Procedure Code, 2025.

Novel questions the reasons for this policy. He believes that the procedure which has just been implemented is in reality nothing new in repressive practice.

Question New applied patterns

Novel said the detention transfer mechanism is not a new policy.

He therefore wonders why this measure is only being taken now.

“The procedure has been the same since the beginning, but why is it only being applied now?” said Novel, quoted from dawn.co.id, Friday (3/27/2026).

He stressed that there was a need for a clear explanation regarding the implementation of this policy so as not to provoke public speculation.

The urgency of the transfer of prisoners

Novel also questions the basis for the need to transfer detention status to house arrest. For him, the urgency of this decision must be explained openly.

“How urgent is it to be transferred to house arrest?” he said.

He said transparency is important to maintaining public trust in the law enforcement process.

Alleged intervention

Novel said it’s possible there were other factors behind the decision.

“Is it because of an intervention? To put reputation aside. Duh,” was the key.
