FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The viral video showing the Roti O outlet refusing cash payments and only processing transactions using QRIS is still in the public spotlight.

More recently, Bank Indonesia (BI) once again reminded economic actors not to refuse cash payments during any transaction in Indonesia.

This was stated by the Head of the Communications Department of Bank Indonesia, Ramdan Denny Prakoso. He pointed out that the provisions regarding the obligation to receive Rupiah have been clearly regulated in the statutory regulations.

Referring to Article 33 paragraph (2) of Law 7/2011 regarding currency, it clearly prohibits anyone from refusing Rupiah in payment transactions.

“It is prohibited for any person to refuse to accept Rupiah whose remittance is intended for payment or to settle obligations which must be fulfilled in Rupiah and/or for other financial transactions, unless there is doubt about the authenticity of the Rupiah,” said Denny, quoted by the political news agency RMOL, Sunday, December 21, 2025.

He said this provision confirms that Rupiah is a legal means of payment and must be accepted in every transaction in Indonesia.

BI explains that the use of Rupiah can be done either through cash or non-cash instruments. The choice of means of payment is left to the convenience and agreement of the parties to the transaction.

Denny continued: His party continues to encourage the expansion of the use of non-cash payments, as they are considered faster, easier, cheaper, safer and more reliable, and can minimize the risk of counterfeit currency circulating.
