FAJAR.CO.ID – Ummat Party Syuro Council Chairman Amien Rais has issued a strong warning to President Prabowo Subianto as he nears the end of two years of his term. Amien stressed that public trust is the main capital that must be maintained for Prabowo to continue to enjoy the legitimacy and support of the people in the conduct of his government.

Public promises and hopes amid Prabowo’s leadership

Amien said that in the next eight months, Prabowo’s term will reach two years. At this time, public opinion certainly hopes that the campaign promises can be fulfilled, especially that of eradicating foreign mafias that control Indonesia’s political and economic sovereignty.

“In about eight months, Pak Prabowo’s leadership will be two years old,” he said at his meeting on Friday (20/2/2026).

“People will be happy if some of Prabowo’s promises can come true,” he explained.

The importance of people’s trust and the role of the opposition in democracy

Amien recalled that a president must not lose the trust of his people. As long as this trust exists, the president’s policies will enjoy broad support from the majority of the population, so that the government’s legitimacy and controlling power can be maintained.

“My opinion is that for a president, in any country, to be stable and remain dignified, he must not lose the trust of his people,” he explained.

Furthermore, Amien also highlighted the importance of the existence of the opposition as part of the checks and balances mechanism in a democratic system. He stressed that the presence of balancing forces is an advantage of democracy that must be appreciated.

“And of course, almost automatically, opposition forces also emerge. And that’s where you can see the beauty and benefits of democracy,” he explained.

Strict warning ahead of 2029 presidential election

Amien ended with a personal note emphasizing that it all depends on how Prabowo maintains public trust. He warned that if the people’s trust was lost, Prabowo should not dream of running again in the 2029 presidential election.

“Well, if the people’s trust is lost, don’t dream of running again in the next presidential election in 2029,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the question of Prabowo’s running mate remains relevant. Names such as Gibran and PAN General Chairman Zulkifli Hasan became Prabowo’s companion candidates.
