Malaysia bans children under 16 from registering accounts on social media platforms, in a bid to protect minors from exposure to harmful content online.
Since last Monday, social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram owned by Meta Platforms, TikTok and YouTube owned by Alphabet, must conduct age verification, according to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Fines of up to 10 million ringgit, or more than Rp. 1,000,000, can be imposed on social media companies that fail to comply with the regulations.
“This measure is not intended to prohibit child users from accessing the Internet or to deny them access to technology,” we read in a government press release.
The government said the move was taken to hold social media platforms, parents and guardians accountable for protecting minors online.
