Quoted in the archives of the American Naval Institute, in 249 BC, according to the philosopher Cicero, Publius Claudius Pulcher became Roman consul and military commander in 249 BC. He was tasked with commanding the Roman fleet during the First Punic War.
However, in Rome there was a tradition of divination that had to be adhered to. Namely divination using chickens.
The method involved bringing sacred chickens aboard Roman troop ships. They are taken out and fed. If they eat well, that’s a good sign. But if it’s the opposite, it’s a bad sign.

Claude apparently ignored this prediction. He actually threw the chicken into the sea. He even wishes that these chickens were given sea water to drink.
“Since they don’t want to eat, let them drink!” Claude said.
After doing this, Claudius still chose to deploy his fleet to war. They all fought. Unfortunately, his troops lost completely.
It is reported that 93 of his team’s 123 ships were sunk. Some members of his team were captured by the enemy.
Due to this defeat, he was recalled to Rome. He was tried for incompetence and disobedience to God. It is believed that he ignored the chickens’ ominous predictions.
He was then sentenced to death or flogging. But this sentence was reduced because he had paid compensation for the Roman ships sunk in the battle.
Shortly after his release, Claude died. We do not know with certainty the year or date of his death. The story of Claudius is very popular and illustrates that in Roman times the tradition of divination was very important. Although the match in predictions can happen purely by chance. (date/take)
